The number of newspapers rose to 1,600 after 1989, but many are now closing as rising prices mean that people can no longer afford them. The government reimposed political censorship in 1994 and in practice now also controls the national independent TV service. A new amateur TV station broadcasting from a Bucharest flat is unlikely to survive. The main opposition paper is "Cotidinul."
